FINALLY BACK HOME AFTER dinner with the Bennet family, sitting on the floor in front of my couch with Ben’s case file spread out around me, I take a deep breath and focus. The pictures of his injuries are hidden in the folder so I don’t have to look at them, they aren’t going to help me find out who was helping Dan. Alex has done a lot of leg work already, gathering information, records, call logs, now we just have to connect it all.

Getting up to get a fresh cup of coffee, I can’t help but wonder how many other times Dan had help sweeping things under the rug. How many other crimes did he commit that he never got punished for? Has he killed anyone? Raped anyone? Assaulted anyone else?

Adding cream and sugar to my cup, I blow the steam and head back to the living room when a loud knock bangs on my front door. Looking at a clock, it’s nine pm, and I’m not expecting anyone. My heart pounds in my chest, my anxiety rising. Living alone is great until there’s an unknown threat at the door.

The knock sounds again, startling me. “Open up, Gorgeous.”

Pushing a breath out, I roll my eyes and unlock the door. Lifting an eyebrow to Alex who is leaning against the frame. “What are you doing here?”

“Can’t I just stop by to chat?” he eyes me, pursing his lips.

“You never have before and you already got what you wanted from me, sooooo…” I let the word drag out and trail off. It takes every ounce of self-control not to press my lips to his, to throw myself at him. My body aches from him earlier, from the rough way he handled me. I want more. I’m safe when he’s around, everything but my heart. The way he takes care of his neighbors, holds me during a panic attack, the look he’s giving me right now, threatens the walls around my heart.

Alex cocks his head, studying me. It’s unnerving, like being under a microscope. I fidget with my mug, taking a sip, then clear my throat. “Anyway, I’m busy. So, if you don’t have anything else, good night.”

“I want to kiss you.” The words fall from his lips like he’s telling me about the weather.

Snapping my eyes to his, my eyebrows pull together. “What?”

He straightens up and takes a step inside. “I want to kiss you.” His eyes drop to my lips, his body tight, tense.

He towers over me, making me feel so much smaller than my five-foot-two frame. Like a child before a giant. “Why?”

“Because I can’t get your taste out of my head. Because I crave the way your body fits against mine.” His voice has dropped to a low grumbling timber, sending goose bumps shooting up my spine.

My belly somersaults, butterflies tickling my insides. Acting on instinct, I step into him, gripping the back of his neck to bring his mouth to mine. My eyes are open when our lips touch, watching him so closely.
